How Indulging in Crafts Benefits Your Mental Health

03/22/2023

We all struggle with stress and other mental challenges in our daily lives, and most individuals turn to their habits of choice to help them cope. There are numerous ways to break the monotony of daily life—some people exercise, some go out and socialize, and others find a crafting project to throw themselves into.

Learn how making may help your mind in numerous ways, from reducing stress to boosting self-esteem. Here are just some mental health benefits of crafting.

Reduces stress and helps you calm down

If you're having trouble clearing your mind of negative thoughts, diving headfirst into a crafty endeavor can help. As you relax and release your worries and stress, you will find that your outlook improves or that your mood softens. Creating anything from scratch is a form of meditation in and of itself.

When you consider the soothing act of hand sewing, knitting, or even beading, you may experience a sense of rhythm. A pattern that lulls you to sleep one needle and thread at a time.

Improved sense of self and confidence

In addition to the satisfaction of a job well done, the endorphins released when something is completed also contribute to an overall sense of well-being. You can boost your sense of achievement by training your mind to search for the silver lining in even the darkest situations and focusing on the lessons to be learned.

It might be unnerving to realize that you can't always make things go your way. Finding a little craft, like a tiny painting or a quilt square, to work on helps you feel productive and in control since you're focusing on completing a single activity.

Enhances cognitive performance and brain function

Crafting also enhances another essential part of our mental health: our ability to think and remember. Learning new abilities, taking on new projects methodically, and memorizing pattern repetitions all put the brain to work, which can help slow the effects of aging on cognition. For this reason, crafts like knitting and crochet are advised for individuals with dementia.

Make Your Valentine Feel Special With These 3 Handmade Gifts

01/25/2023
by

Valentine's Day is about celebrating love. Each year, people in the US exchange more than 120 million Valentine's Day cards. This year, you can stand out by gifting your Valentine a handmade, personalized gift.

Handmade gifts are incredibly unique and personal and hold sentimental value. The crafted gift embodies the love a person shares for another. This symbolic value makes it a great token of love for your Valentine. Read on to learn about a few ideas for handmade Valentine's gifts.

A Valentine's Yarn Wreath

Wreaths are festive and gleeful. This Valentine-themed wreath will add love and romance to the mix.

It's also easy to make. Get some foam and glue it together in the form of a heart. Wrap some thick yarn around it and hot glue its ends at the back. You can also add an arrow embellishment using a wire and heart-shaped felt pieces and stick it in the heart-shaped wreath diagonally.

Make this Valentine's Day festive with decor like this wreath. It can be a really sweet addition to your partner's front door.

DIY Wooden Memory Box

Easily craft a memory box using a box and painting supplies. Paint the wooden box with a sweet quote or a visual representation of a memory of you and your partner. Fill the box with all the memories that you want to include. They can be pictures, your first concert tickets, or even remnants of a memorable night. Use a few little craft pom poms to decorate the box.

Your partner will find this gift truly meaningful. They can keep it close and add their own memories of the two of you together.

Emoji Heart Necklace

These are cute and easy to craft. Jewelry making is fun, but it also gives out great products.

Roll some pink clay and cut out the heart using a heart-shaped cookie cutter. Use a knife to break the hearts in halves with a zig-zag pattern. Next, use some yellow clay to make tiny diamond shapes. Stick one diamond to each half-heart. Use some wire to make tiny hoops on top of the half-hearts. Bake the clay and then let it cool. Finish it up with a string or a chain, and now you have two identical necklaces.

Gift one to your Valentine and make a lasting impression. Show them what it means to be away from them.

The Easiest Outline to Knitting The Cutest Mittens

01/16/2023
by

It's time to put your knitting hobby into full-fledged practice by crafting the classic old-school knitted item: mittens. We expressed our love for mittens when Bernie Sanders' cutest mittens became a viral meme that helped raise $1.6 million in charity.

The great thing about knitting mittens is that it doesn't need extra materials. Just a pair of size 10 knitting needles, a ball of yarn, and a stitch marker, and you're all set. This blog will serve as an easy guide outlining the basic steps for knitting mittens.

1. Start

Start by wrapping the wool around your palm and make a pretzel-shaped "X". Slowly put it off your palm and latch it onto the needle. Casting on is how most knitting projects begin.

2. The Cuff

Making the cuff involves a few knits and purls. Purl is a specific knitting technique to form a stitch that grows away from the needle.

3. The Thumb Gusset

Look at your hand and notice how the thumb sticks out from the rest of the hand figure. Knitting the thumb gusset will accommodate this, which is a small extra triangle of fabric. Making this will mean you have to make a very small increase, i.e., make the thumb sticking out portion slightly wider as you knit. You will later decrease it to close off the thumb.

4. Body

Knitting the main body of the mitten requires simple knitting, as you just have to keep knitting every round. Form stitches and keep working up the palm and fingers portion of the mitten

This goes until you have to incline your knitting to form the decrease so the knitting can slowly come to a close.

5. Thumb

You start knitting the thumb at where you left off the thumb gusset. Imagine it's an ultra-small mitten body that you're knitting. Just like the mitten body, you will keep knitting until you start the decrease.

6. Repeat

Repeat all the given steps for the second mitten. The good news is that you knit it the same way, as both mittens are identical.

Spruce Up Your Home With These 3 DIY Decor Ideas

01/04/2023
by

Home is where the heart is—the saying is as old as time. COVID saw the sharpest rise in home decor e-commerce website traffic. This is because home is a cozy safe space where you can be yourself without judgment. So why not make it even more personal with creative decor made by you?

If you have a knack for crafting exciting things out of seemingly boring items, there’s so much you can do with your home as well. This is why it's always a great idea to buy arts and crafts supplies online and create things for decorating your home. Here are some DIY home decor ideas that you can easily craft on your own.

1. Use Mason Jars

Mason jars have tons of use and blend well in any kind of setting. Their reusability has allowed a lot of people to experiment with them.

The versatility of mason jars is huge. Put flowers in them and they make a great-looking vase. Add water and fish in them: it's your little aquarium. Fill a mason jar with soil and seeds and it will be your little herb garden. Or you can just hang a couple in your bathroom as organizers. This makes mason jars a great DIY home decor tool.

2. Craft Wreaths

A front door with a beautiful hanging wreath is the first big welcome gesture. It invokes the warm comfort of being home and personalized wreaths make it more pronounced.

Often people respond to different seasons with the kind of wreaths on their front doors: during the holidays, it can be a Christmas-themed wreath, while around Halloween it could have a spooky vibe.

The basic items needed for all kinds of wreaths are usually the same: wire, a hot glue gun, and all the added items needed for that kind of wreath.

3. Use Rope

Using rope can add a vintage, rustic, or eastern aesthetic appeal to your home. There are lots of ways rope can make a crafty accent piece for your home decor.

Look for an old tire and wrap the rope around it to make a fancy Ottoman. Use rope with those painted mason jars to hang them from the ceiling. They’re great for complementing other pieces in very unique ways.
